Honest answers to real AI questions

No hype, no jargon. These are the questions Australian professional services firms actually ask us — answered the way we'd answer a friend.

We already pay for AI tools. Why hasn't anything changed? +
Because tools aren't strategy. Most firms buy AI, use it to draft emails a bit faster, and count that as adoption — while the work that actually drives revenue stays identical. MYOB's research found 82% of AI-using businesses report a positive impact, yet 46% never measure that impact at all. If you can't point to hours saved or dollars earned, you haven't adopted AI — you've subscribed to it. The fix is working out where your firm leaks time and money first, then checking whether AI fixes it.
Does my firm need an AI strategy, or can we just buy the right tools? +
The data is unusually clear on this one: Thomson Reuters found firms with a visible AI strategy are almost four times more likely to see a return on their AI investment than firms adopting ad hoc. Strategy doesn't mean a 40-page document — it means knowing which two or three processes AI should touch, what "working" looks like in dollars or hours, and what you're deliberately skipping.
How do I measure whether AI is actually paying off? +
Pick the process before you pick the tool, and baseline it: hours spent, error rate, turnaround time, or revenue per matter/client. Then measure the same thing 60–90 days after. Only 18% of professional services organisations track AI ROI at all — which means simply measuring puts you ahead of more than 80% of your competitors.
What should a small firm NOT automate with AI? +
Anything where judgement is the product: advice, final review of client work, pricing decisions, and sensitive client conversations. Anything involving confidential data in tools you haven't vetted. And anything you haven't first mapped as a process — automating a messy process just produces mess faster. A good rule: automate the preparation and the follow-up, keep humans on the decision and the relationship.
Is it safe to put client information into ChatGPT or Copilot? +
Not by default. Consumer AI tools may use your inputs for training unless you're on a business plan with data controls turned on — and even then, confidentiality and privilege obligations still sit with you, not the vendor. Before any client data goes into any AI tool, your firm needs to know where the data is stored, whether it's used for training, and which categories of information are never entered. If you don't have that written down, that's your first AI task — not another subscription.
Everyone says we're falling behind on AI. Are we? +
Probably not. Across December 2025 to February 2026, 43% of Australian SMEs reported some level of AI adoption — meaning most firms are still working it out. The National AI Centre also found trust is the single biggest barrier: around 65% of non-adopting businesses cite distrust of AI decision-making or a preference for human control. Skepticism isn't being behind. Buying tools you can't measure is.
Do we need an AI policy? We're only a small firm. +
Yes — and you're not alone in not having one. In the legal sector, 43% of firms have no formal AI policy and 54% provide no training on responsible AI use. A small-firm policy fits on one page: which tools are approved, what data never goes in, who reviews AI-assisted work before it reaches a client, and who owns the policy. It reduces risk and, increasingly, clients ask about it.
What's the difference between an AI consultant and just buying tools ourselves? +
Buying tools yourself works when you already know which process to fix and how to measure success. Advice pays when you don't — because the expensive failure mode isn't picking the wrong tool, it's automating the wrong thing. Independent advice should also be willing to tell you to skip AI where it won't pay. If a consultant never says "don't buy this," they're a reseller.
What does working with Ideaspresso actually look like? +
We start small and prove it. The AI Reality Snapshot is a fixed-price, fast diagnostic that finds where AI will genuinely make or save your firm money — and what to skip. If deeper work makes sense, the AI Reality Check goes further with ranked use cases and build-or-skip verdicts. No lock-in, no jargon, and the findings are yours whether or not we ever work together again.
Why is Ideaspresso so skeptical about AI when you sell AI advice? +
Because the skepticism is the advice. Most firms don't need more AI — they need to know which 20% of it is worth their money. Our whole model depends on being right about what to skip, not on selling you more software. That's also why we run the AI Reality Index: original research on what Australian professional services firms actually get from AI, not what vendors claim.
